Choosing Excellence Results: The School District of Lee County

Choosing Excellence is a unique blend of the Sterling (Malcolm Baldrige) and Glasser Quality School Models.   Tropic Isles Elementary (North Fort Myers, Lee County, FL) has been using this blending of programs for almost 10 years.  Their school grade points have increased for 8 straight years.  They have been an A+ school for 7 years and they have made AYP with all subgroups for 5 years.  The School District of Lee County is providing the Choosing Excellence training, designed by Bob Hoglund and Cindy McClung, for ALL of its schools.

1.  Thanks. This was awesome!

2.  I had the feeling he was trying to sell a product.  I was hoping for something that was more authentic (i.e. classroom teacher that uses this system in his/her classroom).

3.  Looking forward to your visit at our school in a few weeks.  Have used your questions with success…always good to get new info.

4.  Good job!

5.  Thanks for the sample questions.

6.  Thanks for including some interaction!

7.  Session was not what I thought it would be.

8.  Excellent strategies for building student ownership and accountability.  Thanks!

9.  Enjoyed the presentation - Thank you!  Slide transitions were too quick at times.  Back and forth motion was distracting at times.

10.  Ideas good for initial set-up of rules & mission statements & problem solving sessions did not fit my grade level with styles presented but concepts fit.

11.  Activates that allowed us to engage/collaborate with others was great.

12.  It was extremely distracting to have slides missing from the handout b/c we wasted time looking to see if they were out of order (somewhere).  We had 2 different packets, but neither had all of the info in order.  I did like the questions.

13.  Thank you.

14.  Love it!

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools has been instrumental in the expansion of Choosing Excellence!

For the 3rd straight year, Cindy McClung and I led a Choosing Excellence workshop for the Collegium, sponsored by The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools.  This five-day workshop was held on Captiva Island for the Golden Apple recipients and Teachers of Distinction.  The combination of Glasser Quality School and Sterling (Baldrige) Framework of Quality provided an effective complement of approaches to system change and student learning.

This years group took off where the 2007 and 2008  groups ended and never looked back.  All of the participants came in knowing that they had been recognized as outstanding educators in a District of 110+ schools, yet were still open to learning and accepting challenges in order to continuously improve.

This year, we were able to add some new content and activities, while maintaining the core of the Choosing Excellence framework.  We  had a great week of learning and laughter, which culminated in outstanding, creative review projects!

We are already looking forward to the 2010 group!

Choosing Excellence

Choosing Excellence is a unique blending of the Glasser Quality School Model and the Baldrige/Sterling Model of Quality. We were charged with the task of condensing the five-day Choosing Excellence summer training for the Golden Apple recipients and Teachers of Distinction into a three-day program.

So far, 24 Lee County Schools have each sent up to 24 educators to the three-day session.

  • 12 Elementary Schools

  • 8 Middle Schools

  • 4 High Schools

The training is divided into Elementary and Secondary groups. So far, close to 600 have attended attended the Choosing Excellence training.

As you can see from the table at the top of this page, the reviews have been very positive with over 90% of the participants reported that they would like follow-up training.  All four categories (Content/Information, Handout/Materials, Presenters, and Overall Quality) have ratings of 93% to 97%. The Information was rated as useful, the presenters as effective and enjoyable and the overall quality was high.
